Résumé

Introduction. The oil and gas sectors are inherently high-risk due to complex processes, high-pressure systems, and hazardous physical & chemical exposure. Yet evidence on injury patterns remains limited, hindering effective safety interventions. This study aimed to categorize body part injuries by event type, severity, and work activity to address this gap.

Materials and methods. This descriptive cross-sectional study used secondary data from five oil and gas companies in Indonesia (2013–2023), including 948 injury cases, of which 621 were limb injuries, which were analyzed. Data were categorized by injured body part (BPI), event type (TOE), work activity, and severity. The Phi coefficient was used to assess relationships between TOE, work activity, and BPI.

Results. This study found that hand, finger, or forearm injuries (BP5) were the most frequent (294 cases; 49.34%) and predominated in all companies, especially Company X1 (>70%). Being caught in, on, between, or under objects was the most common cause, usually involving pinch mechanisms. A strong association was observed between TOE5 and hand/finger injuries (Phi = 0.563), suggesting frequent upper limb pinch and crushing injuries. These incidents, totaling 134 cases, often occurred during nonspecific work activities.

Conclusions. This study highlights the high burden of hand and finger injuries in the oil and gas industry, revealing gaps in safety practices. Targeted prevention focusing on pinch hazards and task-specific risks is needed. Future research should assess the effectiveness of interventions and ergonomic improvements to reduce limb injuries.
